The Clinical Paradigms of Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott: Comparisons and Dialogues
Seeks to present the unique psychoanalytic fundamentals of Klein and Winnicott. The book's purpose is to compare and contrast key concepts to show how the two approaches developed into unique psychoanalytic theories.
The book consists of five main parts, each part including two chapters, one dedicated to Klein and written by Hinshelwood, and the other dedicated to Winnicott and written by Abram.
The chapters describe Klein and Winnicott's views on five selected topics:
Basic principles
Early mental development
The role of the realistic object
Mental pain in psychoanalytic theory
Practice and theory.
Each of the five parts ends with a dialogue between the authors.
Jan Abram and Bob Hinshelwood, together with Aner Guvrin and Sharon Ziv Bayman, will hold a lively dialogue on the similarities and differences between Clyde and Winnicott on topics such as: mental development, the place of external reality in the baby's life, hatred and aggression, mental health and illness, and the goals of treatment.
The meeting will take place on 21.4.21 from 19:30-21:00
From the book:
Bob: From the beginning, perhaps within moments of birth, a baby finds within itself the desperate means to "rage with murder in its heart," as we call it. This early beginning suggests, I think, a biological origin... This cry captures the maternal aspects of all of us. Is this an achievement? Already at this stage? Or, is Winnicott's "hatred" which he presents as an achievement different from the infant's rage and destructiveness that I have described? Most mothers would agree with me, I believe, that hatred is there from the beginning.
Jan: I don't think it's possible that newborn babies, to quote you, are "angry with murder in their hearts." And I don't think it's because I'm sensitive about that idea!
