Disrupted and Traumatic Bereavement: Grief Processes Following October 7

Dr. Einat Yahna, Dr. Dana Mor, Prof. Sharon Ziv Beyman

The space of bereavement in Israel, and even more so since October 7, is exceptional in its intensity and complexity. A loss that is not only traumatic, but also unfolds over time, accompanied by uncertainty, prolonged waiting, public struggle, and repeated exposure to shocking information. For the families of the murdered, the families of the abductees who died, and entire communities, the grieving processes did not proceed according to a familiar sequence: they were interrupted, paused, fragmented, and often experienced as having no clear beginning or possibility of certainty and closure.

This evening will focus on a discussion about:

  • You have experienced disruptions in the mourning process, especially since October 7th.

  • Discussion of the clinical and social implications of disrupted grieving processes.

  • Discussion of therapeutic responses that have been created and the need to develop language and tools for dealing with these situations.

We would like to ask:

  • What does grief look like when its basic conditions have been disrupted?

  • What is necessary to enable support, accompaniment, and rehabilitation in situations of bereavement under exceptional conditions?

The evening will deal with principles and clinical discourse from the experience and clinical work of Dr. Einat Yahana and Dr. Dana Mor in accompanying families dealing with disrupted bereavement in a variety of contexts, with an emphasis on the coping of the families of the deceased and returned abductees, the families of the murdered in Nuba, and other contexts of the events of October 7.
