Session 15:
A conversation with Alan Wachtel
The practice of couples therapy
Sunday, February 20, 2022 between 7:30 PM and 9:15 PM

The conversation will be held in English.
Couples therapy has evolved into one of the most effective interventions in psychotherapy. No other psychological intervention has established a more remarkable ability to effect significant change than couples therapy. Ellen Wachtel is a world-renowned couples therapist who has written extensively on the subject. Her books have been translated into several languages and she conducts workshops in many countries. Wachtel combines an experiential, psychodynamic, and cognitive approach in her systemic orientation. Wachtel's work focuses on methods that will help motivate each partner in a problematic relationship to undergo a change in their patterns of marital attachment. She has found that these methods also work with "difficult couples."
In this conversation, Wektel will share her unique working methods with viewers. Specifically, we will explore how the therapist’s attention to moment-to-moment intervention options allows her to keep sessions focused, hopeful, and positive; how to focus on couples’ strengths even when they are in the midst of serious conflict; and how to leverage a deep understanding of childhood to help each partner not only avoid pitfalls but also create a truly loving relationship.
Ellen Wachtel has a doctorate in clinical psychology from New York University and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
Her books have been translated into several languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Arabic. She conducts workshops at home and abroad and teaches couples therapy courses at the Ackerman Family Institute.
