A conversation about intimacy, relationships, and sexuality in the 70s and older

Published by Kinneret Zmora Dvir

Amiya Lieblich, one of the leading researchers of Israeli society, has been writing "Life Story Research" for years, in which she talks with interviewees about the hottest issues that concern Israeli society.

Her latest book, "Just a Hug - Love After 70," includes a fascinating collection of candid, personal, and engaging interviews with interviewees between 70 and 95. The picture that emerges from Lieblich's interviews about intimacy, marital relationships, and sexual relations at this age shows how love and passion continue to be the central themes even in adulthood.

According to Lieblich, "relationships are not just a matter for young people. Seniors are also active on dating sites, matchmaking through friends, connecting in hiking groups or in assisted living, but at this age, when all the significant stages of life are already behind them, relationships have "completely different colors." Lieblich tries to find out what characterizes new loves in adulthood and how they differ from youthful and earlier loves.

In a conversation with Amiya Lieblich, we will discuss:

Her unique research and what it reveals to us about Israeli society.

What characterizes relationships, intimacy, and sexuality in adulthood?

What makes loves satisfying throughout life and in old age?

How does an older relationship respond to the need to make up for previous disappointments?

Are men and women different in relationships?

How do children react to their parents' new love?

What characterizes sexuality in the 70s and older?

We will try to understand what connects her new book to "Coffee and Death," her previous book in which she spoke with participants about memories, fears, and experiences related to death, and the current book.

Amiya Lieblich is Professor Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Department of Psychology, and currently Head of the School of Society and the Arts at the Ono Academic Center. She is a pioneer of qualitative research methods in Israel and internationally, and specializes in narrative research of Israeli life stories. In addition to her academic work, Amiya is involved in guiding autobiographical writing, and has authored many documentary books for the general public: including Kibbutz Makom, Except Birds (about prisoners of the War of Attrition), Voices - New Poverty in Israeli Society, and Coffee of Death. Her latest book, "Just a Hug - Love After 70," was published about a month ago, and deals with creating a new relationship in the third age.
