Treatment of severe personality disorders in times of crisis:

Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Transference-Focused Therapy (TFP)

Lecturer: Prof. Barry L. Stern

Under the supervision of Prof. Yogev Kiviti

The seminar will be held face-to-face in English.

Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is a psychoanalytic approach to the relatively structured treatment of patients with turbulent personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. TFP is an integrative approach, from the school of Prof. Otto Kernberg, that combines psychodynamic ideas (mainly from object relations), attachment theory, neurocognitive research, principles from time-limited therapies, and is evidence-based. The goals of the treatment are personality change, which is expressed in changes in internal representations (identity, self-esteem, etc.), in satisfactory interpersonal relationships, and in changes in occupational functioning.

The seminar will present the basic principles of transference-based therapy (TFP), centered on a detailed case study. The ideas and stages of treatment will be demonstrated, from the initial contact with the therapist, through the assessment phase and creation of a therapeutic contract, to the course of treatment and intervention techniques. Following the trauma of 7/10 and beyond, there will be a discussion of the need and how to integrate supportive elements in acute crisis situations such as situations of war and collective trauma.

Participation in the seminar requires prior (basic) familiarity with object relations theories.

Target audience:

Specialist and intern psychologists, clinical social workers or social workers with a master's degree with experience in therapeutic and/or systemic work, expressive and creative therapists with a master's degree, psychiatrists and clinical criminologists. The seminar days are suitable for therapists in private and public settings.
