The motivational approach and the levels of change model as a basis for making therapeutic decisions

What's in the workshop?

The question of how to motivate patients to change is one of the most common among professionals. How do you deal with patients who have difficulty achieving change? How do you help a patient who is unable to progress from a stage of talk to a stage of action? How do you understand patients' ongoing difficulty in maintaining the change they have achieved?

The motivational approach provides an in-depth and practical look at these questions and many more. It provides both a deep look into the human psyche and helps with practical tools to approach and make the change. Therefore, the motivational approach fits well with the concept of integrative psychotherapy, which advocates combining tools for the advancement of patients.

In our lecture, we will introduce clinical skills that are very helpful in the process of increasing motivation, through case studies of individual therapies and see how this also integrates into couples therapies. We will learn to move towards change, without ignoring the "not wanting" part of ambivalence.

The motivational approach allows us to see more clearly the intersection of content and process, due to its recognition of stages of change that are, on the one hand, very general and similar from person to person, and on the other hand, very personal. The timing and choice of action, then, are rooted in both theory and the nuances of the case, just as the integrative approach assumes.
